(MONTREAL, Que.) – the Seattle Sounders quest for a league title fell one victory short as they dropped a, 2-0, decision to the Montreal Impact in the A-League Championship game Saturday at Claude Robillard Sports Complex. It was the first A-League championship for the Impact since 1994. Seattle last won the league title in 1996, their last trip to the Finals before this season.
The Sounders played Montreal even through much of the first half. The letdown came in the 33rd minute. Impact defender Maurico Vincello was allowed to run with the ball through the middle of the field and get off a left-footed blast from 18 yards out. The ball curled inside the left post past the outstretched arms of the Sounders diving goalkeeper, Preston Burpo.

Burpo was able to knock the ball out of play with a diving save.

(Seattle, Wash.) – The Seattle Sounders defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 Friday night in front of a rain-soaked 2,496 fans at Qwest Field to win the first leg of the two-game A-League Western Conference Finals. Coming into the game, Vancouver had not allowed a goal in 338 minutes, dating back to a 2-1 home victory against the Minnesota Thunder on August 19. It took a magnificent goal from Sounders midfielder Jonathan Bolanos to end the streak, and Danny Jackson led a superb defensive effort by Seattle, which takes a 1-0 series lead going into Vancouver’s Swangard Stadium on Sunday.
The game got off to a somewhat slow start as the majority of the play in the first half was clogged up in the midfield. With both squads struggling to create chances and either defense refusing to give an inch, tensions on the field were on a knife edge. Vancouver defenders Gordie Lyall and Justin Thompson both picked up yellow cards for rough challenges. Seattle, however, was able to remain aggressive while still keeping its composure.

(Seattle, Wash.) – Seattle Sounders forward Welton Melo scored the decisive goals in game two and the resulting golden goal series overtime to knock the number one seed Portland Timbers out of the A-League playoffs in a thrilling contest Sunday night at Qwest Field. Welton scored early in game two, and a strong Sounders defense held off Portland for a 1-0 win to send the series into overtime. Welton then scored again in the 10th minute of the first overtime session to ice the series for Seattle with a 3-2 aggregate win. With the win, the Sounders advance to the second round of the A-League Western Conference playoffs, in which they will play their other northwest rival, the Vancouver Whitecaps.
After a somewhat controversial 2-1 loss Wednesday night in Portland, the Sounders got the quick start they needed with a nicely worked goal in the fifth minute. Midfielder Jason Farrell received the ball 25 yards from goal and dribbled around the top of the penalty area before poking a brilliant ball through to a streaking Billy Sleeth at the right of the Portland goal. Sleeth cut toward goal and drew the defense toward him before slipping a quick pass across to a completely unmarked Welton who slotted his shot into the opposite corner to cap off a pretty play.

(Seattle, Wash.) - - The Seattle Sounders were rattled by the Minnesota Thunder as they fell 3-1 in the regular season finale before 4,853 fans at Qwest Field in Seattle. Sounders midfielder Darren Sawatzky scored his 30th career goal as a Sounder, but the Thunder’s three-goal lead was too large a deficit to overcome. With the loss, the Sounders advance to the post season as the fourth and final seed in the Western Conference, Minnesota claims the third seed.
The Thunder took an early lead scoring in the 7th minute of the match. Thunder midfielder Godfrey Tenoff lined an 18-yard header past Sounders goalkeeper Preston Burpo as he dove for the ball. In the 38th minute, Thunder midfielder Jeff Mateo bent a 22-yard free kick up and over a Sounder six-man wall to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead going into the half.

(Seattle, Wash.) – Preston Burpo recorded his eighth shutout of the season and Craig Tomlinson scored his first goal as the Seattle Sounders beat the Puerto Rico Islanders 3-0 Sunday night in front of 2,911 at Qwest Field. The Sounders had little trouble dispatching the expansion Islanders and once again helped their playoff chances in getting their season best fifth-straight win.
Sounders forwards Welton Melo and Roger Levesque and good work on the flanks from Sean-Michael Callahan and Ben Somoza gave the Islanders defense fits in the first half. Welton and Levesque in particular were very unlucky in failing to give Seattle the early lead with some smart combination work.

The resulting double overtime session was a filled with several excellent scoring chances, highlighted by Brown’s first-ever professional goal.
