CAM WEAVER TRANSFERRED TO NORWEGIAN 1ST DIVISION CLUB
Posted 12/18/2006

(Seattle, WA) – The Seattle Sounders today announced that reigning United Soccer Leagues (USL) First Division Rookie of the Year and regular season Scoring and Goal Scoring leader, Cam Weaver, has been transferred to FK Haugesund of the Norwegian 1st Division.

In making a strong push toward Premiership football, FK Haugesund acquired the services of Weaver for cash (upon gaining clearance from the Norwegian Football Federation), additional compensation after Weaver has notched 40 starts and a guaranteed percentage of future sale of the former Sounder.

“I want to thank Brian Schmetzer and the Sounders for letting me pursue a dream of taking my game to Europe,” said Weaver. “I learned a lot this past year, had great teammates and will look forward to building on my success.”

“We will certainly miss Cam and his goal scoring abilities but this is another great example of the Sounders being able to identify and develop local talent,” said Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer. “He deserved a chance to play at a higher level and Haugesund was first in line. I think Cam has a great soccer future and we wish him well.”

“I’m happy Cam will continue to develop his game in Europe; in fact, I hope that development leads to a spot on the U.S. National Team one day,” said Sounders owner Adrian Hanauer. “Of course we’ll miss his services on the field next year, but one of the strong points of our team has always been the development of young talent – we want to see Cam take that next step in his career.”

Weaver finished the year tied for the league lead in goals and points with 1994 World Cup MVP Romario – 18 goals, 39 points – despite being the last player to make the squad for the defending champion Sounders.

When Cuban international Maykel Galindo was knocked out of the lineup in a terrible collision to the face in a friendly, Weaver stepped up and shouldered the scoring burden. The 6-4 forward scored four goals in the first five games and found the back of the net in 14 games over the course of the season with a four-game goal scoring streak midseason. He steadily remained ahead of Romario for most of the season, extending his lead to five goals with five games remaining in the season.

Weaver's first professional season also included setting the Sounders' single season mark for goals scored by a rookie, two USL First Division Player of the Week selections and a total of three Team of the Week honors. The Kent, Wash. native was also selected to the 2006 USL First Division All-League First Team.

A member of the Seattle University National Championship winning team in 2004, Weaver scored 17 goals and recorded seven assists in his two seasons with the Redhawks.

After winning the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges in 2003 with Skagit Valley College, Weaver transferred to Seattle University as a junior when he won GNAC Newcomer of the Year honors. Weaver earned All-GNAC honors each season, including a First Team All-GNAC selection his senior year.

Weaver was a four-year varsity player for Kentwood High School in Kent, WA. As a senior, he lead the team to a 3rd place finish, earning a First-Team selection.

Formed on October 28, 1993 when two clubs merged, FK Haugesund, calls the 10,000 seat Haugesund Stadium home.
