Bio: Velez was drafted by the New York - New Jersey Metrostars in the 2003 MLS Draft. Attending Barry University, Velez was voted to the First Team All-Conference as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior Velez was selected as a Second Team All-American. Velez went to the NCAA Division II Fianl Four in 1999 and 2000.
2003 was Velez's first season with the Sounders. Accustomed to the defender position, Schmetzer used Velez as a forward where he registered three goals and three assists.
